The nights are drawing in and London Fashion Week has been and gone, it can only mean one thing: winter is coming. Before you pack away your summer clothes and hit the high street, it’s a good idea to have a game plan. Picking up gorgeous accessories is all well and good, but you need to have the basics in your wardrobe already.
No fashionista’s autumn/winter ’13 wardrobe would be complete without the following pieces.
During your next shopping spree, make sure a few of these essentials make it into your basket.
Bold sweaters
Style and comfort go hand in hand with this season’s glam sweater style. It’s all about being big and bold. Oversized sweaters can be dressed up with this season’s popular skinny leathers, or you can add some quirky on-trend zing to your everyday wardrobe with a cute animal print sweater… or a sweater with an animal printed on the front. Woodland creatures are all the rage at the moment, so look out for owls, foxes, and squirrels printed on big comfy pieces.
Pencil skirt
It’s all about the silhouette, and a chic pencil skirt will give you an instant hourglass shape. It’s the perfect addition to an autumn/winter workwear wardrobe, too. If your place of work is formal, you’ll need to stick to plain colours, but for an up to date twist you could go for a pencil skirt in one of this season’s most sought after colours or patterns.
Tartan, houndstooth and dusky pink were all big hits on the catwalk this season, and translate extremely well onto the high street.
Biker jacket
Nineties pop style was all over the high street this summer, with neon crop tops and jelly sandals around every corner. Now it’s time for nineties grunge to get a look in, and what better way to add a bit of Johnny Depp attitude to your wardrobe than with a biker jacket?
Biker jackets are that perfect balance between smart and casual, and are perfect for transitioning from day to night.
Two in one dresses
Two in one dresses are a life-saver during those dark and dingy winter mornings when you barely have the energy to make a cup of coffee, let alone put together a coordinated outfit.
You probably already have a few summery versions in your wardrobe, so get rid of them and make way for a few in this seasons prints and colours. Look for lace, animal print, and leather styles for something a tad more bold and daring.
Skinny jeans
The bitter weather means fewer chances to show off your legs, so if you’re proud of your pins you need to invest in a good pair of skinny jeans.
If you buy them in the right size you’ll find that this much maligned style is actually very flattering, making your legs look longer and your shape more elegant. There are lots of ways to style your skinny jeans during the colder months, and they can be dressed up for a night on the tiles or down for a lunchtime date.
Patterned blouse
Blouses are sneaking out of the workplace and into the realms of everyday wear this season, so make sure you pick up a few brightly coloured and boldly patterned pieces. Try pairing a floaty leopard print blouse with those skinny jeans for date night, or with a leather skirt for a night out with the girls.
What will you be wearing this season?
